When you are improving a home for resale, or for yourself, the choices you make can make it or break it in resale profits. This article will help you understand the best choices you can make and why. Get out that pencil and paper, because you're gonna want to write this stuff down.

Venetian blinds can be vacuumed but at some point, they need to be washed. One way to wash them is to put them in the bathtub and use a brush and solvent to clean off the accumulation of dust. An easier way, may be to wash them while still hanging. Put a plastic drop cloth underneath to keep water off the floor.

Be mindful of your environment when doing home improvement, and only tackle upgrades that fit the overall picture. Forgetting things like insulation in the North, or sun-shielding in the South, will seriously lower the value of any renovations you make. Add value to your home, not negative features.

When renovating your kitchen, avoid tiled counters. Tiled countertops are less sanitary than granite or mock-stone countertops, because food and other contaminants can build up in the spaces between the tiles. Tile countertops can also crack or even shatter if a heavy dish is dropped onto them, unlike countertops made of more modern materials.

Fix a nail that's popped partially out of your wall covering with a couple of drywall screws! Insert a drywall screw a few inches above the offending nail and another a few inches below. This will pull the drywall or other wall covering back into the wall stud so that you can hammer the nail back into place without blemishing your wall. Paint the visible nail and screw heads and you're done!

One way to prevent bugs from coming into your house, and to save money on heating and cooling costs, is to seal any cracks or openings in your house. To fix those window gaps, you can get some simple caulk. For gaps or holes in the wall or floorboard, you can try Spackle or canned foam. Once the caulk dries, bugs won't get in and air won't leave.

Keep this information handy for future renovations. Whether you are doing a home improvement project this weekend or saving up for a major undertaking in the future, this information will be helpful to you now and later. All it takes is a little good advice to make your home improvement dollars go the furthest.
