What's the fastest way for a lady to extend her individual safety? Research the best self defence martial art? Learn self defence online? These are good options, but they're not as fast as buying a self-defense widget. Self-protection widgets wouldn't be usually dedicated weapons, they are improvised weapons that are legal to carry.
Improvised weapons are common items that serve a practical need, and may be employed for self-defense in an emergency. There are several commercially available products. As a pro instructor, I recommend females to focus upon keyring devices unless you wish to pursue heavy training or get a weapons permit. A keyring is something regular adult has when away from the home.
Attached is a brief list of different devices, where to source them and cost, and a few Pro's and Con's to each:
Self Defense Ring (as in finger ornament) - ($10, Amazon)
Pro - Adds a point or stud to the hand, which can add power to strikes.
Con - Available almost exclusively in male styles, and the strike won't have enough penetration to stop an assailant.
Self Defense Umbrella - ($100, Amazon)
Pro - Serves a particularly actual purpose and can serve as a walking stick also.
Con - Another item to account for, possibility of having it in a time of need are changed by climate.
Keyring Palm Stick (also called a kubatan) - ($10.00, Amazon)
Pro - Proved design, and can be productive.
Con - Adds length to total keyring so it does not fit as well in a pocket or purse.
Kitten Head-type Keyring Devices - ($10.00, Amazon)
Pro - Might make a punch more effective with adequate training. Straight hand strikes is a trained rather than natural movement.
Con - Tiny ears have edges that catch clothing and loose items in a purse, entire hand isn't supported by the punch.
Keyring Stun Guns - ($20, Amazon)
Pro - Makes an imposing sound and the blue electrical arc might scare an attacker..
Con - These put out 6,000,000 volts, which sounds like a lot - but doesn't have much effect. Models that have over 30,000,000 volts can be an improvement, but are bigger and don't fit on a keyring. Must be charged to work.
Keyring Pepper Spray - ($10, Amazon)
Pro - Will cause crying and affect vision if a threat is hit in the face quickly enough.
Con's - Small cannister size hasn't got enough spraying power to hit a threat far enough away to stop him.
EDC-1 Keyring Tool - ($12.95, Self defence Global)
Pro - Fits nicely in the hand and is effective with a natural hammerfist-type strike.
Cons - Is available only through one source, as Self-defence Global wants to provide coaching instead of just selling gadgets.
The last of these devices, the EDC-1, is my own design. I designed it thanks to the shortcomings I saw in other gizmos ladies have brought to me over time - but any of these keyring options would be better than zip.
Another positive is that these devices are so cheap that a few can be purchased, and you can test and see which you like, without being out tons of dollars. Give yourself more of an edge, at a low-cost and no aggravation. Try one of the keyring devices and stick with the one you personally like.
