Inclinometer or just clinometer is a piece of equipment used to measure angles of elevation, depression, or slope of an object in relation to gravity. Other names such as tilt indicator, level meter, level gauge, gradiometer, gradient meter, slope gauge, declinometer, roll indicator, and slope alert are used to refer to it. The equipment measures both positive and negative slopes and uses three major units of measurement. The three units are topo, percent, and degrees. Inclinometers for sale can be found from any store that stocks related pieces of equipment.

The construction of slope gauges is done differently. Latest ones have more features and are more sophisticated. They can be used to achieve more than previous models. Older versions are only capable of measuring in degrees while later models can measure in topos, degrees, and percent. With such capabilities, the user is provided with a higher level of flexibility in their work.

The working of various models of clinometers varies depending on the kind of technology used to build it. However, generally, they work by generating some artificial horizon and measuring angular tilt with respect to that horizon. The user must have a clear line of view with the point being measured. Precision and accuracy are dependent on a few factors such as temperature, vibration, cross-axis, zero offset, shock, linearity, sensitivity, acceleration, gravity, and deceleration among others.

Accuracy of a device should be among the factors to prioritize when buying a clinometer. Accuracy is highly dependent on the age of technology a device is based on. Latest technologies produce more accurate devices. Accuracy also varies from one model to another. In most devices, accuracy is limited to a single degree of an arc.

Some of the devices in which tilt gauges get used include automobile security systems, specialty switches, cameras, and aircraft flight controls. In addition, they are also used in applications that require tilt to be measured such as platform leveling and boom angle indication. Gas bubble in liquid, pendulums, accelerometer, electrolytic, and liquid capacitive are good examples of implementations of slope gauges. Slope gauge technology is now being applied video games.

The accuracy is a very important aspect in clinometers used for sensitive functions such as aircraft flight control. Digital versions are capable of reaching accuracy levels of 0.0001 degrees. Accuracy is dependent on a combination of factors. However, it typically lies in the range of 0.01 degrees to positive or negative 2 degrees. That accuracy range is further dependent on the situation and sensor of the device.

The casing in which a device is placed can greatly determine its accuracy. The casing should be made of strong material that can withstand pressure and normal wear and tear caused by normal operation. ABC plastic is being preferred over PVC because it can withstand a wide range of temperatures without undergoing deformation.

The price of an inclinometer should not be based on a lot when buying one. Investing in a high quality device capable of operating under various conditions is advisable. Structural and other forms of failures are likely to be experienced if low quality device is bought.
