Artificial turf is sometimes referred to as synthetic grass/turf or fake grass/turf. Basically, it is a manufactured product that is produced in a factory setting before it is transported to the place of use. In general, it is used in placed where it is problematic to grow grass. It is also used in places where grass maintenance is impossible or is not desired. This is what Florida artificial turf is all about.

The product being tough in nature, is able to withstand high levels of occasional use without significant degradation. This quality has allowed for the product to find use in stadiums and sports arenas. The popularity of the product has grown now allowing it to also have applicable use in playgrounds, private lawns, and golf courses.

These products have a very long history. The introduction of the product occurred in early 1960s. The introduction was done by a company called Chemstrand Company, which later renamed to Monsanto Textiles Company. Fake grass is produced using the same method as carpets. However, fake turfs are meant to be tougher and longer lasting than carpets.

Production methods used in the early 1960s were very basic and the materials used were inferior. With time, more research has been invested into these products, allowing for the use of very advanced methods. The materials in use today are also very advanced to withstand the wide range of extensive use that the products are put to. There are different grades of the product so that a buyer can choose depending on the use they have for it.

UV damage has been a major problem in first and second generation products. However, that problem has been solved in modern products because they are treated with chemicals that protect against UV damage. Tear and wear caused by friction has also be lowered through the use of better quality materials. Abrasion in these products has also be lowered a lot, something that has resulted in lesser instances of injuries to athletes.

Same way rugs and carpets do, fake grass comes with a backing and a feathery upper part comprising the blades. The material used in manufacture of backings of carpets is similar to the material used to make backings on these products. In the manufacture of low quality products, some of the materials employed include plastic, polyester, and jute. In comparison to this, the use of polyester tire cord happen in making backings in high-quality products.

Nylon, polypropylene are some of the materials that are used to make the blades of these products. Nylon blades can be made using two different methods. The first method entails making the blades in the form of thin sheets that are then cut to make strips. The second method involves extruding the blades into molds that have round or oval cross-sections. The second method usually produce blades that appear more like natural grass as compared to the first method.

For transportation, the product is usually rolled in the same way as real turf. The surface where installation will be done must be prepared adequately before installation. If the area is too large, it is important to hire a service company for surface preparation and installation.
