Private detectives have been the central topic of many films and television series. It is no wonder that so many people see them as either romantic figures, salty older guys struggling to make a living or even flamboyant playboys. They solve complicated crimes and they seem to be in perpetual competition with the police. The reality is different, however. Becoming a private investigator is not, in most cases, simply a matter of hanging out a shingle. Only a very small portion of the work performed by private detectives can even remotely be described as glamorous. The bulk of their work is routine. Private detectives have, in fact, solved many cases that seemed to have puzzled the police.

Many businesses also hire detectives to investigate a wide range of issues. This can be suspected fraud or industrial espionage or it may simply be to investigate the private lives of employees due for sensitive positions.

As the world becomes ever more dangerous, many wealthy people hire private detectives to provide covert protection to themselves and their loved ones. In such cases the detective monitor his charge from a discreet distance, not openly visible but ready to intervene when necessary. In some cases such protection is provided without the charge even knowing about it. IN the long term these services are extremely costly.

Choosing a private investigator is not a straight forward matter. It is important to hire someone that has ample experience in working on the type of case in question. They should be able to provide valid references and they must most certainly submit a formal quotation clearly stipulating the cost and the responsibilities the accept. Larger investigation firms often employ several people that are all specialized in a specific field.

The private investigation industry has grown into a large industry. This is in part because the police simply do not have the resources required to deal with very heavy case loads. Clients are willing to pay because they want results and they want them quickly.
