You may be thinking of getting a pet seeing how happy your friends are with theirs. In fact you are thinking of taking the plunge and visiting any of several French bulldog breeders in Ohio so that you can get a puppy. Before you do visit theme however, it pays to know a bit more about the pet you have in mind.

It is a dog that extends its lineage all the way down to the ancient Greek era when it was bred for the primary purpose of fighting bulls in the arena in a sport called bull baiting. At the height of the popularity of the sport, the breed was widely distributed by the help of Phoenician traders in the Mediterranean. Once the sport was outlawed, many of these dogs became pets and household companions instead. It is considered as the sixth most popular dog breed and has a playful and adaptable personality.

This dog is an attention monger according to a majority of those that have had experience with it. If it feels it is being ignored it will let out an eerie ululating noise that many have labeled as the French Death Yodel. Females of the breed are also known to be very caring and also protective of those they care for.

Medium is the rating given to the energy level of this dog, and even though it is quite high, it is a breed that is quite happy being inactive for the better part of the day. Due to this, they can be great companions in small quarters such as condominiums or apartments. They will also need at least a half hour walk everyday for them to stretch and let off excess energy.

They are also closely related to the British bulldog, although being much smaller but having a wider body circumference or girth. They have smaller and shorter legs also and have ears that are constantly erect. They are much tamer and more docile than the English breed, and can thus be kept with other animals and even children safely.

Cataracts are something that this breed contends with as it gets on in years. Throughout its lifetime it will also have problems in terms of regulating its internal body temperature, as it has a compact airway coupled with a pug nose. It will not do to keep this pet in climates that are tropical or sub arctic in nature, for it can have fatal consequences.

Around eight to ten years is the average lifespan of this dog, which is not very long. However, with constant visits to the vet for advice on proper health and nutrition, this lifespan can be extended somewhat.

In conclusion, this short write up has shown what basic you should know if you want to take this breed on as a new pet and companion. You must always be a responsible owner by getting more information on whatever pet you want to take on so that you will not regret the commitment later on, not only for your sake, but for your pet's sake as well.
