Birds are truly beautiful creatures and they are so common in many areas that people do not realize that some species are as endangered as they are. Endangered parrots are a good example of this. There are so many different varieties of parrot that it may be surprising to learn that approximately one third of parrot species are actually endangered. If you don't want to see these beautiful creatures disappear, here is what you need to know about protecting them.

Unlike some types of birds that may have only a few varieties, there are many different types of parrots. They range in size from small to very large. All parrots have large, curved bills. One thing that endears many people to these birds is the way they use their four toed feet to grasp and manipulate objects like toys and food.

One reason why many species are becoming endangered is that their habitat is being destroyed. Deforestation is making it harder for parrots to find food and places to breed and nest. While helping to halt this process will not totally address the issues that these birds face it is an important step. So can helping to fund the establishment of breeding refuges and preserves.

While you may wonder how to help slow habitat loss, the fact is that there are many companies that are working to achieve the same goal. If you are not sure which companies to support, find out which ones are working in areas where the most endangered birds are breeding. That way you can help protect the parrots that need the most care and preservation in order to prevent them from becoming extinct.

One characteristic that most parrots share is brightly colored plumage. This makes them stunning to look at. These birds also tend to be quite intelligent and many of them can be taught to mimic human speech. These things, coupled with longer life spans, make these birds very popular as pets even though the larger species can be quite expensive, especially if they are hand reared as babies.

Many people are poaching animals from the wild. While most people think of larger animals, the fact is that birds are also being poached as well and it is beginning to put a huge strain on the wild bird population. There have been many stories of people who are stopped while trying to transport baby birds or eggs hidden inside their clothing. The value of a rare parrot can make the stiff fines for poaching worthwhile.

There are reputable breeders who are helping to keep parrot populations strong. They selectively breed birds, raise healthy creatures that are hand reared. By speaking with other parrot fanciers to find out who is a reputable breeder and choosing to work with them when bringing a bird home you can help protect wild bird populations.

Because so many of these birds are struggling in the wild, it is even more important for consumers to do their research before they add one of these birds into their homes. By researching breeders, finding ones that hand raise babies born in captivity rather than plucked from the wild, and taking steps to help preserve natural habitat, you can help to ensure these colorful creatures will be around to amaze and enchant future generations.
