Choosing a goat can be a complicated task, but using certain guidelines by experts in animal husbandry can help simplify the process. When you are buying goats, it is preferable to source young animals. A young animal offers more productive years than an older animal. Doe lings to consider as replacements are bred in a year of age. The hooves should be of the same size and not elongated to support its weight evenly. Elongated hooves is a sign of bacterial infection.

When purchasing goats it is important to minimize the risk of introducing pests and diseases to your property. The breeder may provide you with De-worming and vaccination records. Relatives of the goats for sale can be viewed and evaluated. Extremely thin or extremely fat goats should be avoided. Such animals have low fertility rate. Buy from reputable suppliers. Such vendors have a reputation for having healthy stock.

Regardless of their condition, goats should appear alert and strong with good appetite. You should be keen to observe any symptoms of ill health. The most conspicuous is lameness. It should not show any signs of parasite infestation. It is not a good idea to select a goat that has loss of hair and presence of external parasites.Such a breed will be of poor quality.

If they are available, look at the sire and dam of the doe, you want to purchase from available records. Go for a doe with a large frame and wide spring ribs. The top line-back, loin and rump should be long and level. Choose a goat with strong, straight legs with a long wide loin. It should have a high fertility rate and preferably sire multiple kids.

Choose a breed with a large udder and two big teats. A goat with extra teats is not good for breeding. Also, the teats should not be cracked. A swollen udder might be a source of infection by bacteria. It is important to ensure that the udder of the goat is soft and not hard to touch. This will ensure the kids will suckle appropriately.
