Disc pain is all too common and affects the lives of many people. Fortunately, in most instances relief can be found with Norwalk CT chiropractors. Some sufferers ignore the pain, which frequently makes the situation worse. There is no reason to delay seeing a chiropractic doctor.

Exactly what a disc is may be a mystery to some people, even those who suffer from disc pain. In very simplistic terms, a disc acts as a ligament or joint that holds two vertebrae together. There are twenty three discs in the spine. They function much the same as a shock absorber does in your car. Discs also allow flexibility in the spinal column. Disc pain can be the result of age, physical impact, disease or any combination of the three.

Damaged discs may be bulging, slipped or herniated. As the disc malfunctions due to damage it may come in contract with an adjacent nerve causing pain. It is not possible to know what the cause of your disc damage is without a thorough evaluation by a chiropractor.

The chiropractic approach to care is the holistic approach. The chiropractor will first evaluate the patient and his or her overall health. To pinpoint the source of the pain, the doctor may use imaging studies or laboratory testing. Thereafter, your doctor will work with you to decide on the appropriate care for your needs.

In many cases, spinal manipulation or spinal adjustments are helpful to manage the pain. This may include manual therapy and in some instances therapeutic exercises. All chiropractic care is non invasive, and DCs do not prescribe medication to dull the pain. The course of last resort is surgery, which may or may not be successful.

Unlike surgery, chiropractic care has little or no risk involved. Chiropractors believe that the body will usually work to heal itself. Most patients find relief and do not need surgery. If the chiropractor identifies a problem that requires surgery, he or she will refer the patient to a surgeon.
