Emotional eating is just like any other habit, such as taking drugs or alcohol. People don't view it in this light. They may find that a drug problem is serious and one needs to go to a rehab in order to deal with this. However, many folk simply don't understand why a person like this can't simply stop eating. Counseling will help one to get down to the root of the problem. People take drugs some of the time because of a bad experience in their lives. It helps numb the pain. They may take the drug to help eliminate stress, tension, anxiety or depression. The same goes to show with emotional eating. A person like this will feel so much better after they have binged on sugar and carbohydrates.

People decide to go on diet because of this. However, it usually doesn't last very long. These are the people who have tried just about every diet under the sun. It can be the cabbage soup diet, restricting calories, special programs or shakes. Nothing will seem to work for them. They feel so much better once they have had a bite of something, which usually consists of comfort food.

It is not the healthy type of food that will bring comfort to a person like this. Usually it is sweet things or creamy sorts of foods which pile on the calories. A person just wants more and more as they feel their anxiety and stress drift away. It is typical of someone who is depressed. They feel that they deserve it.

These could be feelings that have come up in the past in their childhood. They will begin to feel negative. It is a pattern that occurs. It is one that the individual is not able to cope with on their own unless they receive counselling. During counselling, the individual will learn what works best for them. Sometimes it is meditation and breathing exercises, while other times it is music.

If you do manage to break free of the eating, you may turn to another habit, such as drinking. This can develop into something more serious and this turns into a big addiction that will begin to affect everyone else. This is why counselling is necessary. One usually has to find out when they are triggered. These are things that you have to work through when you are talking to the counsellor.

There will be goals to work towards so that you begin to think about the next time you eat for various reasons. You will think of something else to do which is healthier. There are specific types of therapy that are very helpful for this. Group therapy can also work very well and people enjoy talking to others who are in the same boat.

Cognitive therapy is also a great way to begin because you will find that you begin to eat every time you start to become negative about yourself. When you start to eat, these negative feelings will drift away. But you are left with more negative thoughts as a result of your actions. Your thoughts will be directed into something that is more positive.
