Just like any other American state, Rockland has its political guidelines from the United States of America. For anyone who wants to participate in an election, he or she must understand and follow the guidelines given in what is called the Running for office Guidebook. Seeking for an elective position starts by first enrolling in a political party through which you are seeking to be elected. If you are to seek a position in Rockland County Executive Democratic Primary you have to be staying in Rockland County.

The nominations of any candidate if any party is carried out in the primaries or the caucus. The nominations are supposed to start from the village where one resides through the village political party. That means that one has to be an enrolled member of the party from the grassroots levels.

There are times that the political parties may choose to nominate someone who is not a member of this party but before they do that they must file a certificate of authorization. The certificate must be authorized and signed by the presiding officer and the secretary of this meeting that decided to give such authority. Those who are seeking judicial office positions are not required to file such authorization certificate.

There is also a provision of law for those who wish to vie as independent candidates. That means a person may seek to vie without using any political party. There must be evidence that such a person has not participated in the village caucus or any of this party primary. The candidate must be a qualified voter and then present what is known as the nomination petition to the election board.

The forms that these candidates sign must have all the information as required by law. They must state the date of the election, the position that the candidate is seeking for as well as the name of the candidate. It should also indicate the where the person resides, the postal address, the person who signed the form and the witness and the town or city where the candidate resides.

The candidate will be required to submit such forms to the board of elections in person especially the pages containing the signatures. Any other person can submit the remaining part of the data. When submitted in bits, the papers must be filed in sequence and also held together.

The petitions are supposed to be filed with the board of elections in specified times. The submissions are supposed to be done only during working hours and deadlines adhered to. If the last day for submitting papers falls on a nonworking day, the next working day becomes the deadline for the same.

Transparency in both the political parties as well as private candidates is a requirement by law. All the funds donated to the parties are supposed to be stated as well as the way they were spending during the campaigns. All the information about the code of conduct is available on the county board of elections. Anyone seeking to run for any political position must be willing to adhere to the law whether supported by any political party or whether doing it independently.
