As more and more of our lives take place online, any business that wants to succeed needs to make sure it has an effective Internet presence. However, if your website does not work properly, your business will suffer. Learn how to design a great website with the following tips and techniques.

For multimedia presentations, take advantage of the new HTML5 standard. Although HTML5 isn't quite as robust for animation and games as Flash, it has the advantage of working stably on mobile phone browsers, including those contained in Apple hardware. HTML5 is also quite a bit leaner than Flash, so load times will improve, as well.

Keep your pages to a reasonable length. Add content through new pages on your site, instead of tacking it on to the end of a home page. For the most part, readers are hesitant to keep going on a page that seems to scroll on forever. If you must have a lot of content on one page, include hyperlinks at the top and in sections throughout the page. This allows users to navigate through the available content without excessive scrolling.

Apart from the aesthetics of your website, remember that all files included must be small. Your website's loading time is directly affected by the file sizes you have on your site. You want your loading time to be as quick as possible. Remember that some of your visitors are going to be using slower Internet connections than others. Your website should be tested on all connections, even a dial-up connection, to make sure it loads quickly.

To help your visitors be able to easily read your site, you should design it using contrasting colors. If you use colors that contrast, it makes the text stand out. If you have black text with a black background you will not be able to see the information, but if you have black text with a white background it becomes simple to read.

When designing your website, you should avoid using too many different types of fonts. You must also consider how different fonts appear on the standard computer screen; smaller serif fonts (Times New Roman, for example) are somewhat hard to read. Most sites use Vedrana, which is easily read in different colors and sizes.

Separate your topics. If you have several topics of discussion on your site, put them on different pages. This helps alleviate any confusion that your customers may experience, as well as giving search engines a broader and more clear view of your site, potentially bumping you up higher in their rankings.

Always check your website for broken hyperlinks. Check links on a regular basis as you are designing, and make sure to perform a check before uploading your site to the server. This is very important because visitors will be put off if they repeatedly click on broken links on your website. Check your website regularly to make sure it works properly. As you have seen, web design does not have to be a difficult task. Once you know more about the basic principles involved, you should be able to construct a website that will appeal to your visitors and help them find what they need.

The secrets have been revealed and you should now have the knowledge you need to get started on your website. Start your rough draft and make a list of all the elements that you loved on those other awesome websites so you can work them into your own. Get creative and have fun!
